Cody Devereaux vs Wolfboy

I'm a fan of Conan O'Brien. I apparently have a thing for tall, sarcastic guys. Over the last several months, Conan has featured a sketch that any vamp fan can enjoy. Yes, I'm talking about Cody Devereaux, Conan's "sexy vampire personal assistant."


What are Cody's qualifications? He's a "brooding, handsome, misunderstood vampire who drives teenage girls crazy." He's also jealous, petty, and prone to suicide. If that's not enough, he has his own sappy theme song that cracks me up every time I hear it.

The best sketch involves Cody emo-ing out because Conan hires a passionate wolfboy assistant...and a mostly naked mummy assistant, and Cody doesn't like the competition.

Too bad I couldn't find video of that sketch online. I did find this sketch, though, which is also amusing.

"I will make you not thankful for this Thanksgiving!"

No holiday is complete without some tongue-in-cheek vamping.  Here is a slightly humorous take on a Bella-Edward thanksgiving complete with an evil "Vampire Diaries"-esque brother...and here which includes cameo performances by Buffy and a reference to True Blood.:)

"Vampire's" Choice Awards

Nominees for the People's Choice Awards were announced on Tuesday.  Among the vamp shows/cinema featured were: True Blood, Vampire Diaries, and Twilight.




True Blood, shown on HBO, is up for two categories: TV Obsession and TV Sci-Fi/Fantasy.  Main actress Anna Paquin, Sookie, was nominated for TV Drama Actress.






Vampire Diaries, from the CW, is in the running for two: TV Sci-Fi/Fantasy and New TV Drama.







Twilight, the seemingly new teen culture phenomenon, holds a place in the following three categories: Favorite Movie, Movie Franchise, and Onscreen Team (Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner).  Kristen Stewart, Bella, was nominated for Favorite Movie Actress and Robert Pattinson, Edward, has a spot in the Favorite Movie Actor slot.  Taylor Lautner, Jacob, is in the Breakout Movie Actor category.





Tune in to CBS for a live presentation on January 6th, looks like it may prove to be a good year for the vamps!

The Vampire Diaries Pilot Episode

Thursday night marked the first episode of The Vampire Diaries on the CW.  This series is based off of the novels written by LJ Smith.


As a previous reader of the series, I must say the first episode did not really entice me to continue watching.  I felt like they hinted at way too many plot points in a single episode.  At this rate, I do not see how they can have reoccurring seasons without going beyond the material covered in the books.  For viewers without prior reading background, like the friend I watched it with, the show left confusion and slight intrigue.  This intrigue may be enough to keep viewers coming back for a few more episodes, but I doubt at this rate that the show will produce any long term fans.

The episode started out close to where the books began.  We get reminded earlier than necessary that this is a vampire tale and they enjoy sucking the life out of humans, preferably teenagers (that of course look like adults in their late 20s).  The main vampire (played by Paul Wesley) is slightly introduced in all his hotness and glory and we get to meet the object of his affection, Elena (played by Nina Dobrev).  Personally, I think more attention should have been paid on explaining Elena's background, but it seems like the show is reserving that for future episodes.  The crow and appearance of Damen (played by Ian Somerhalder) is wayyyyyyy too early.  The drama of the crow and fog appearances really should have been drawn out over at least two or three episodes.  The references to this Katherine character and the rings really needed to be divulged later on, when they could be explained, not just thrown in as "oh you think that is kinda cool huh, keep watching to find out wink wink."  Maybe now that they have developed some hype/viewer base they will slow their roll, but that remains to be seen in future episodes.

I predict a short lived probably one season or hurter second season of this show.  It really is a shame since the books are really great.  Readers of the series will lose interest fast and non readers will be curious but I don't think it will be enough to keep the show on the up and up.

Comments about how this show is a rip-off of Twilight really tick me off.  The Vampire Diaries came out in 1991, so if anyone can be accused of leeching off someone else's ideas, it is definitely NOT in this case.

Bandwagon, This Way. All Aboard!

Earlier this month, the New York Times featured an article titled A Trend with Teeth (see this previous blog entry). It looks like the Times isn't the only publication to jump of the "let's document the vamp-craze" bandwagon. On July 16, Newsweek featured a vamp themed article titled, cutely enough, Bite Me! Why We Love Vampires.


This is a fascinating article. It covers some of the vampire trends in pop culture, the history of the mythos, the more popular (and reoccurring) fantasies, and even the psychology behind the intense sexuality that so many seem to associate with vampires.

Sneak Peek of The Vampire Diaries
